Well, to us, movies with stories about personal trainers shaping up characters in the plotline is combining the best of the fitness and entertainment worlds. Otherwise, let’s take a look at some of these famous movies and their interesting personal trainer characters.

Mickey Goldmill, Rocky Balboa

The Rocky movies represent true classics, chronicling a struggle to become the best boxer one can be. In fact, this might be one of the best stories about training of all time. Well, one of the best. The chicken chase scene comes to mind: “First, because I said so. And second, is because chicken-chasing is how we used to train back in the old days. If you can catch this things, you can catch greased lightning.”

The line “I feel like a kentucky fried idiot” pretty much seals the deal on this one.

Ken Carter, Coach Carter

Okay, this is also a golden classic and a standard when it comes to movies about athletic training, and it’s definitely up there with Rocky. The push-ups and suicides scene is one that stands out to us, where coach says “When we step on the floor every second that clock is ticking, we are pedal to the metal, we run the ball, we pressure the ball, and most importantly we control the tempo of the game, we make them play Richmond Oiler ball.”

To say this movies is inspirational would be a complete understatement, and we’re glad that Coach Carter exists to motivate basketball players, athletes and active people of all kinds.

Yoda, Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back

You probably didn’t see this one coming, and that’s probably because Yoda, while highly respected as a sage mentor and master jedi, isn’t typically seen as a personal fitness trainer. Well, while Yoda isn’t wearing a sweatband and yelling at Luke to run 400s, in his old age, he does help train Luke to confront Vader. This piece of wisdom is more valuable than any strength or aerobic gains one could possibly have: “A jedi uses the Force for knowledge and defense, never for attack.”

Kasuke Miyagi, Karate Kid

What scene comes to mind when you think about Karate Kid? Yeah, we thought so too! The “wax on, wax off” scene is such an all-time film classic, and for good reason. There really is a level of brilliance in connecting something so seemingly unrelated like washing and waxing something as a personal favor for Mr. Miyagi, only to have it connect for Daniel-san when he’s facing off against the Cobras: “Wax on, right hand. Wax off, left hand.”

White Goodman, Dodgeball

Okay, we had to save the best for last on this one. This ridiculously abrasive and loud-mouthed character is no doubt cocky and proud of his gym, and Ben Stiller plays White Goodman down to a T. Just check out how silly this line is: “Here at Globo Gym, we understand that “Ugliness” and “Fatness” are genetic disorders, much like baldness or necrophilia, and it’s only your fault if you don’t hate yourself enough to do something about it.” That’s no doubt a very offensive and wildly incorrect claim, but hey, it makes for great fitness-related comedy. If anything, this movie is a refreshing satire on the “macho” gym culture so commonly seen.
